Why What You Wear Matters (and It’s Not About Impressing Anyone)

Why What You Wear Matters (and It’s Not About Impressing Anyone)

Posted by Robert Hole on

I used to think fashion was superficial. That it was about keeping up with trends, impressing others, or squeezing into a mold that was never designed for women like me.

But then I healed. I grew. And I realized—what I wear is one of the most powerful tools I have to express who I am.

Fashion isn’t about labels or perfection. It’s about walking into a room and feeling aligned with your inner truth. It’s about choosing clothes that don’t just fit your body—but fit your story.

Here’s what I’ve learned about fashion, self-worth, and dressing like the woman I’ve become—not the one the world tried to shape me into.

1. Your Closet Should Reflect Your Healing

When I was in a season of pain, my clothes mirrored it: oversized, muted, hidden.

As I stepped into healing, I started reaching for color. For softness. For structure.
Not because anyone told me to, but because my wardrobe became a physical reflection of the light returning to my life.

Now, I wear clothes that feel like joy. Like energy. Like power.
And I’ve learned that the right outfit doesn’t change who you are—it gives her permission to show up.

2. Confidence Is an Inside Job—But Your Outfit Can Be the Doorway

Confidence doesn’t come from the mirror. It comes from you.
But let’s be honest: the right outfit helps.

You know that feeling when you put on a dress and your shoulders square just a little more? Or you catch your reflection and think, “That’s me. That’s her”?

That moment matters.

When I walk into a pageant coaching session, a speaking engagement, or even just a coffee shop, I choose clothes that remind me of the woman I’ve fought to become.

That’s not vanity. That’s victory.

3. Style Is an Act of Self-Respect

You don’t have to spend thousands to dress well.
But you do have to believe you’re worth dressing up for.

Whether it’s a flowy sundress, your favorite pair of jeans, or a sparkly headband that makes you smile—choose clothes that honor the woman you’re becoming.

Your future self is watching. And she’s cheering you on.

4. Fashion Is a Creative Outlet for the Soul

For me, fashion is play. It’s therapy. It’s storytelling.
Some days I want to feel bold—so I wear red.
Some days I want to feel soft—so I wear linen and bare feet.
Some days I want to feel unstoppable—so I wear heels that echo like thunder.

There’s no wrong way to show up.
Only honest ways. Expressive ways.
And in a world that often tells us to shrink—fashion lets me expand.

5. Healing Looks Different on Everyone—So Will Your Style

Maybe your version of power is a leather jacket.
Maybe it’s a wrap dress, or a t-shirt that says “Not Today.”

Whatever it is, let your wardrobe evolve with you. Let it be messy and magical. Let it be a living extension of your resilience.

Because at the end of the day, fashion isn’t about anyone else’s approval.
It’s about how you feel when you zip it up, step out, and say:
“This is me. And I love her.”

Final Thought

Fashion is not shallow. It’s sacred.

It’s how I armor myself in softness. How I dance with color.
How I reclaim the mirror, one outfit at a time.

And if no one’s told you lately—you deserve to wear clothes that make you feel beautiful, brave, and ready for the life you’re building.

Because you, my friend, are worth celebrating.

One outfit at a time.
